Protecting Elephants in South Africa

Siphesihle "Sphe" Mbongwa, MSc, PGDPM Control Technician and Acting Park Ecologist, Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, South Africa

Siphesihle ("Sphe") Mbongwa is a Science Technician and ecologist with Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife at Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park in South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal province. With more than a decade of experience in ecological research and protected area management, he studies wildlife populations and the ecological processes that shape savanna ecosystems. His work focuses on monitoring white rhinos, assessing the effects of elephants on vegetation and gathering data that guides conservation decisions in one of South Africa's most significant wildlife reserves.

A central part of his research examines how large herbivores influence their habitats. For his master's degree in zoology, he investigated the effects of elephant browsing on savanna vegetation, conducting field surveys to measure changes in tree density and plant species composition over time. These findings contribute to a broader understanding of how elephant activity alters landscapes and how park managers can monitor vegetation changes while maintaining healthy ecosystems.

In the field, Siphesihle conducts aerial surveys of white rhinos, following systematic flight paths and recording GPS locations to estimate population numbers and map their distribution across the park. He also uses geographic information systems (GIS), spatial analysis and vegetation mapping to examine patterns in wildlife distribution and habitat conditions. By combining observations from the air with detailed vegetation surveys and spatial data, he provides park managers with a clearer picture of ecological change. His research supports informed decisions about wildlife populations, habitat management and the long-term protection of South Africa's biodiversity.
