Hlatikulu Bush Lodge

Location
Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, South Africa

Set on a forested terrace above the Black Mfolozi River, this secluded bush lodge in the southern section of Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park accommodates one group of up to eight guests. Mature tamboti trees surround the camp, which is unfenced, allowing wildlife to move freely through the grounds. The river that winds through the surrounding bush attracts a variety of waterfowl. Wooden walkways follow the river, offering closer views of the riparian habitat and its wildlife.

At the center of camp, a high, thatched communal building houses the lounge and dining area, with a fireplace, sofas and armchairs, exposed timber supports and open sides overlooking the tamboti woodland. Thatched guest units have two single beds, mosquito nets and en suite bathrooms with showers and toilets. Lights and ceiling fans are powered by generator, which is switched off at night. There is no cell service: this is an immersive experience in South Africa’s bush. A local cook prepares group meals, while the dining area has a long wooden table and simple chairs. Outdoor concrete benches are shaded by trees.

The surrounding park protects black and white rhino, elephant, buffalo, lion and leopard, along with cheetah, African wild dog, spotted hyena, giraffe and numerous antelope species. Limited generator hours and a light ecological footprint help reduce energy use in this remote protected region.
