Physical Requirements
Earthwatch Expeditions offers access to some of the most wondrous nature encounters the world has to offer. Many take place in destinations that are wild and remote, with varying physical demands and limited medical facilities. All field research trips may not be suitable for every traveler. In order to participate on this expedition, you must comfortably and reliably be able to execute all physical requirements as noted below.

Trip Pace
Several days in the field participating in killer whale research
Full days outdoors, often 5–8 hours at a stretch during research activities
A flexible schedule based on weather, sea conditions and research priorities
Three to four dedicated research days in Vestmannaeyjar
A mix of structured exploration and adaptive fieldwork
Walk 2–4 hours at a time during hikes and on exploration days
Traverse uneven terrain, including rocky paths, grassy slopes and coastal areas
Walk short distances uphill
Maintain balance on a moving boat in variable sea conditions
Carry a small daypack with water and personal items
Tolerate cold, wind and changing weather conditions
Ground transportation by van or minibus
Ferry crossing to Vestmannaeyjar
Boat travel for marine research
Local transfers between accommodations and activity sites
Boat outings may involve cold, windy or choppy conditions
Guests must be able to board and exit small boats
Full days on the water with limited facilities
Ferry and bus schedules may vary and are coordinated carefully
Have good balance and stability
Walk unassisted on uneven terrain
Enter and exit vehicles and boats without assistance
Be comfortable working in remote outdoor environments
Temperatures during research are typically 40–50 °F
Wind, rain and rapidly shifting weather conditions are common
Strong coastal winds and cool temperatures are expected
Extended time outdoors is required
