Juan Zavaleta

Juan Pablo was born and raised in Mexico City. He studied environmental science at the Michoacan University of Saint Nicholas of Hidalgo, focusing on the conservation of insects. While at school, he fell in love with Michoacan's culture, gastronomy and biodiverse ecosystems. He became fascinated by the millions of monarch butterflies that overwinter in this Mexican state each year. In 2020, Juan Pablo completed his binational master's degree in international ecology in Canada and Mexico, including a research internship in northeast Brazil.

A passionate environmental educator, Juan Pablo is always eager to share his knowledge of insects and the wonders of their miniature world. He is a member of an insect environmental education nonprofit in Morelia, Michoacan, and frequently participates in research projects. Juan Pablo became a Nat Hab Expedition Leader in 2023 and is thrilled to have the opportunity to guide travelers on monarch butterfly adventures in Michoacan.

In his free time, Juan Pablo loves puzzles and board games, reading, traveling, playing video games, learning languages, teaching French and studying psychology.
