Yaju Upadhyaya
Yaju grew up in New Delhi and developed an early passion for the wilderness through frequent treks in the Himalayas and time spent on his family’s riverine island in Northeast India. He studied tourism, setting the foundation for a career dedicated to wildlife and conservation. After earning his degree, he interned with a leading wildlife tour operator, visiting national parks across India and discovering a special interest in birdwatching.
His dedication led him to a renowned naturalist training program for Indian safari guides. Over the next decade, Yaju worked as a naturalist in Kanha National Park, where he built a deep connection to the land and its diverse wildlife and eventually made Kanha his home. Alongside guiding, he pursued his passion for wildlife photography, with a focus on lesser-known species in remote regions of India. He joined Natural Habitat Adventures as a Photo Expedition Leader in 2024.
With more than 10 years of experience in wildlife photography, Yaju has guided photographers of all levels on safaris across India. His intimate knowledge of light, terrain and animal behavior helps guests capture meaningful wildlife images. His photographs have appeared in scientific journals, government reports and field guides used by travelers in the region.
In addition to leading expeditions, Yaju mentors emerging guides and encourages young people across India to explore careers in wildlife tourism and conservation.
What's in My Camera Bag
Given India’s strict airport security and carry-on regulations, I prefer to travel light, adjusting my gear based on each trip. I usually carry just one camera body and one or two lenses—typically a large zoom and a wide-angle—keeping my bag compact and easy to stow in an aircraft’s overhead compartment.

What Our Guests Say
Yaju is an eminently qualified naturalist! Additionally, he showed concern for guests' understanding and was responsive to questions. He is a great Expedition Leader for Nat Hab.
Yaju was knowledgeable and worked very hard to create an atmosphere that allowed all travelers to have the best experience. I was especially impressed with his ability to ease us through the complications of India airport security! He ensured that everyone had equal viewing of wildlife and could hear and understand any information provided. Very personable and professional.
It's obvious Yaju quickly evaluates the group and makes sure each person is given individual time and attention. He has a great knowledge of the wildlife, and when I was in the vehicle with him he knew all of the birds, too. He also spotted the leopard, which made him my hero!
