Leo Garrigues

A birder since the age of six, Leonardo Garrigues has been accumulating natural history knowledge and experience all his life. In addition to studying biology and forest engineering at the National University of Costa Rica, he has been involved in various projects on the Osa Peninsula, where he has helped monitor jaguars, white-lipped peccaries and harpy eagles. He is also part of a team that is recording bird calls and other animal vocalizations in the Osa. Leo's guiding experience likewise began on the peninsula, where he led trips to Corcovado National Park. He has worked as local guide at the famous Rancho Naturalista in Costa Rica, as well as Tandayapa Birding Lodge and Wild Sumaco in Ecuador. Leo now leads birding and natural history tours all over Costa Rica and is proud to be among Nat Hab's professional Expedition Leaders. In addition to his expertise about birds and wildlife, Leo also enjoys sharing his knowledge about Costa Rican history and culture with his guests.

Praise from Nat Hab travelers:

M. Burcher
"Leo was an excellent guide. He always went above and beyond to ensure we were enjoying every minute of our trip. He was very organized and helpful the entire time. He always paid attention to each person in our group and catered to each of our preferences."

T. Iki

"Leo was fantastic and a perfect partner for Marco. Their personalities complemented each other, and there could be no doubt that they both loved sharing all their knowledge and excitement with the travelers on this Costa Rica Family Adventure. Thanks to him, everything we hoped would happen for our grandchildren during their first adventure trip did come true. They had such fun, learned so much and best of all said, "When can we go on another adventure?"

A. Esbenshade
"Leo was great. He went above and beyond to find us animals, including leading us on night hikes and early morning, pre-breakfast hikes."

D. Harding
Leo was very knowledgeable about every aspect of the country and was an absolute wizard with birds. He was extremely considerate, related very well with the children and even staged a soccer game for all of them knowing they were interested in it. When my wife had a minor cut on her leg, he proved an excellent medic and followed up daily. He was easygoing, patient and figured us out right away. Everyone loved him."

W. Temkin
"Leo was fantastic and had an almost encyclopedic knowledge of animal, plant and birdlife in the area. He was very easy to be around and was extremely attentive to everyone's needs."
