Churchill Northern Studies Center
Location
Churchill, Manitoba, Canada
Set within the Churchill Wildlife Management Area, this LEED-certified research station sits on open tundra shaped by wind, snow and seasonal wildlife movement. The building is designed for comfort in a remote environment, with warm, well-lit interiors and shared spaces for gathering after time outdoors. From the outdoor viewing platform, guests look out across the surrounding landscape for sightings of migratory birds and terrestrial mammals, while an indoor Aurora Dome offers a sheltered place to watch the night sky.
Guest rooms are simple and functional, with two twin beds, individual closet space, a small writing desk, bedside shelves and reading lamps. Shared washrooms are separated by gender and include toilets, sinks and private showers. Wireless Internet is available throughout the facility, though cellular service is limited in this remote location.
Meals are served in a communal dining room, with hearty, cafeteria-style dishes prepared daily. Greens grown on-site in the Center’s Rocket Greens hydroponic farm—such as fresh lettuce, kale and herbs—are used in meals, reducing the need for transported produce. A small gift shop offers books, field guides and locally made items such as tundra berry jams and jellies.
The facility is designed to reduce environmental impact in a remote region, using energy-efficient systems, heat recovery and intelligent building controls. Composting toilets and biofiltration reduce water use, while a large-scale composting program diverts significant food waste from landfills.
