Cave Creek Ranch
Location
Portal, Arizona
At the entrance to Cave Creek Canyon, Cave Creek Ranch occupies a property with roots dating to a 1906 homestead, when this remote corner of southeastern Arizona was known more for ranching than birding. Today, cottages, lodge apartments and gathering spaces are scattered across 12 wooded acres beneath towering rhyolite cliffs, creating a retreat that’s deeply connected to the landscape. Hummingbird feeders hang throughout the grounds, deer and coatis regularly wander through the property and guests gather on the front porch to watch the steady procession of wildlife. The ranch has become one of the most recognized birding destinations in the Southwest, with Elegant Trogons, Painted Redstarts and numerous hummingbird species among the area's celebrated residents.
Accommodations range from cozy cottages tucked among the trees to lodge apartments and a spacious ranch house. Each features a private bathroom, fully equipped kitchen and climate control, while many include wood-burning fireplaces, covered porches, creekside patios or views into the canyon. Interiors are comfortable and residential rather than resort-like, encouraging guests to settle in for several days of exploring. The resort’s front porch serves as the social heart of the property, where birders compare sightings and plan the day's excursions. Guests can relax in the common room or venture onto nearby trails that lead deeper into the Chiricahuas' forests, canyons and mountain slopes.
A designated wildlife sanctuary, the ranch maintains native habitat, minimizes light pollution and carefully manages its grounds to support the remarkable biodiversity that has drawn generations of birders, naturalists and researchers to Cave Creek Canyon.
