No journey to Southeast Asia is complete without a visit to the stunning archaeological complex of Angkor, the sprawling collection of temples that spans more than 150 square miles of jungle on the outskirts of the city of Siem Reap. Angkor Wat is the crown jewel, the largest religious monument in the world, constructed at the height of the Khmer civilization in the 12th century. Famed for its intricate architectural design, stacked towers and extensive bas-relief carvings, Angkor Wat is at its most mesmerizing at dawn, bathed in the golden glow of sunrise. Other Angkor sites are also beguiling, which we explore on visits to several temple ruins and the carved sandstone riverbed of Kbal Spean in the lush foothills. Highlights of Siem Reap’s Buddhist and French colonial heritage round out our itinerary.
