Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in San Jose and meet your Expedition Leader

  • Check in to a hacienda-style hotel in the capital

  • Gather for a welcome dinner with your Expedition Leader

Day 2: Boat the canals of a roadless rainforest wilderness

  • Fly by private charter to remote Tortuguero

  • Cruise the rainforest canals for monkeys, sloths and caimans

  • Hear about Tortuguero's Indigenous and Afro-Caribbean heritage

Day 3: A full day in Tortuguero, from dawn birds to night frogs

  • Cruise the canals at dawn for toucans, herons and macaws

  • Climb a paved trail to an overlook above the canal-laced jungle

  • Walk the lodge grounds after dark to find frogs

Day 4: Reach the wild Osa, edge of Corcovado National Park

Day 6: Trade the coast for the misty green mountains of Monteverde

  • Hear your Expedition Leader on Pacific-slope reforestation

Day 7: Into the canopy of the world's most studied cloud forest

  • Cross the Skywalk's elevated walkways into the cloud forest canopy

  • Look for quetzals and bellbirds in the private Curi-Cancha Reserve

  • Spot strangler figs, orchids and draping epiphytes throughout the forest

Day 8: Arrive beneath Arenal Volcano at a former research station

  • Cruise Lake Arenal for views of the volcano's symmetrical cone

  • Check in to the only lodge inside Arenal National Park

  • Walk the grounds after dark for the chorus at the frog pond

Day 9: A full day of rainforest trails beneath Arenal Volcano

  • Walk trails through nearly 700 acres of primary rainforest

  • Hike to Danta Waterfall, a cascade dropping into a clear pool

  • Cross hanging bridges for eye-level canopy and volcano views

Day 10: Sloths in the canopy, then coffee and chocolate by hand

  • Walk the private Mariolas Trail for two- and three-toed sloths

  • Tour a family farm to taste its coffee and chocolate

  • Spend free time in the town of La Fortuna before dinner

Day 11: A final morning under Arenal before the drive home

  • Take a last breakfast in the shadow of Arenal Volcano

  • Return by road to San Jose to connect with homeward flights
