Located 1,000 kilometers from continental Ecuador, the Galapagos is a shining microcosm of this rich biodiversity. The archipelago is largely shaped by three powerful marine currents that make it unlike any other ecosystem in the world.
Fascinating news from the Enchanted Isles! Scientists recently discovered a high-temperature hydrothermal vent field of around 50-foot-tall hot chimneys christened “Tortugas.” They also found 15 never-before-seen species, including a “living fossil” mollusk known as a monoplacophoran and a nursery with eggs of Pacific white rays—the second documented in the world (the first being in Canada).

Traveling to Ecuador’s biodiverse Galapagos Islands has the promise of being the trip of a lifetime.
Deep beneath the waters of the Galapagos Marine Reserve (GMR) and atop a submerged volcano, an ancient coral reef was just discovered by an international group of scientists. It’s the first to be documented inside the protected area since it was established in 1998.
