Itinerary

Our 13-day Photo Expedition adds two nights and three extra days in Argentina to our classic itinerary to offereven more photography opportunities in the best of Patagonia.Added highlights include hiking and photo opportunities from El Chalten—a small mountain village located within Los Glaciares National Park with access to the stunning peaks of the Fitz Roy Massif.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Patagonia's gateway to the great ice field

  • Meet your Expedition Leader and fellow photographers at a welcome dinner

  • Base in El Calafate on the edge of the Southern Patagonia Ice Field

Day 2: Birds, waterfalls and the road to Mount Fitz Roy

  • Photograph some 80 bird species at Laguna Nimez Nature Reserve

  • Walk through lenga forest to the 65-foot Chorillo del Salto waterfall

  • Arrive at camp with Mount Fitz Roy rising in full view

Day 3: A glacier vantage beneath the Fitz Roy massif

  • Hike 6 miles through lenga forest to a Piedras Blancas Glacier vantage

  • Photograph white orchids and Magellanic woodpeckers along the Rio Blanca

  • Frame the blue glacier and its meltwater lake below the Fitz Roy massif

Day 4: Last hikes among the Fitz Roy peaks

  • Hike to a Cerro Torre overlook or to Laguna Capri below Fitz Roy

  • Photograph sharp granite spires reflected in a mountain lake

  • Cross the Patagonian Steppe back to El Calafate for dinner

Day 5: A road-less estancia deep in Los Glaciares

  • Cruise iceberg-strewn Lago Argentino for photography among the floes

  • Reach a remote estancia inside Los Glaciares, accessible only by water

  • Photograph Andean condors soaring on 10-foot wingspans overhead

Day 6: Land's-end views of South America's largest glacier

  • Drive by 4x4 to the only land-based overlook of Upsala Glacier

  • Photograph the glacier before other visitors arrive from your remote base

  • Capture blue icebergs crowding the edge of the continent's largest glacier

Day 7: Face to face with the advancing Perito Moreno Glacier

  • Cruise privately to the towering blue face of Perito Moreno Glacier

  • Frame close-ups of one of the planet's few advancing glaciers

  • Walk boardwalks for changing views of the ice and drifting icebergs

Day 8: Conservation and gaucho life on Patagonia's largest ranch

  • Check in to a working cattle ranch on a corridor with Torres del Paine

  • Learn gaucho traditions and how sheep dogs work the herds

  • Look for grazing guanacos, gray fox and Darwin's rhea on the steppe

Day 9: In the field with Patagonia's puma researchers

  • Join full-time researchers on the ranch's puma study in the field

  • Review camera traps and scan with binoculars for elusive pumas

  • Keep cameras ready for the region's wildlife on an all-day safari

Day 10: Into the Towers of Paine with a puma tracker ahead

  • Reach the dark granite spires of the Torres del Paine

  • Photograph with a puma tracker scouting the park by radio ahead of you

  • Stay in a forest yurt at Patagonia Camp on private land beside the park

Days 11 to 12: Photograph the peaks, lakes and wildlife of Torres del Paine

  • Hike to the French Valley, Base of the Towers or mellower lake overlooks

  • Photograph mirror-blue Lake Pehoe and thundering Salto Grande Falls

  • Walk the Sendero de La Fauna, a guanaco route through puma hunting ground

Day 13: Leave Patagonia Camp for the southern gateways home

  • Depart Patagonia Camp for a transfer across Chilean Patagonia

  • Connect with flights from Puerto Natales or Punta Arenas

Please Note: This itinerary is meant as a guideline and can change due to the unpredictable nature of the wind and weather in Patagonia. On some occasions, conditions may require us to deviate from our intended itinerary, in which case we will provide the best available alternative. And we'll make a great adventure of it!
