Itinerary

Some departures, as indicated, will run in the opposite direction, first visiting the Amazon before traveling to Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu. All itineraries will start and end in Lima, and all inclusions are the same.

Itinerary

Day 1: Begin your journey to Machu Picchu and the Amazon

  • Arrive in Lima before continuing to the Andes tomorrow

  • Enjoy a relaxing evening near the airport before tomorrow's flight

Day 2: Discover the Inca heartland beneath the Andes

  • Feast farm-to-table at Hacienda Sarapampa on quinoa, giant corn and queso fresco

  • Explore the rarely visited ceremonial site of Urco, its terraces and Inca caves

  • Learn Andean history at an evening lecture on the Incas and Machu Picchu

Day 3: Explore ancient traditions in Peru's Sacred Valley

  • Walk the pre-Incan salt pans of Maras, harvested for more than a thousand years

  • Look for hummingbirds at the Ensifera garden over a valley picnic lunch

  • Explore the southern sky with an astronomer, by telescope or simulation

Day 4: Reach Machu Picchu, the Lost City of the Incas

  • Ride the Vistadome train along the Urubamba River beneath towering Andean peaks

  • Explore Machu Picchu's granite temples and terraces with your Expedition Leader

  • See Ollantaytambo's hilltop Inca fortress, where Spanish conquistadors were once defeated

Day 5: Experience Machu Picchu at your own pace

  • Return to Machu Picchu with unhurried time for personal discovery

  • Choose a challenging climb up Wayna Picchu, high above the ruins

  • Head back to Cusco by rail and road through the high Andes

Day 6: Explore the enduring legacy of the Inca capital

  • Walk Cusco's cobblestone streets past the Inca Wall and Plaza de Armas

  • Stand before Sacsayhuaman's giant granite walls, fitted so tightly no blade slips through

  • Admire the ornately gilded colonial churches of the former Inca capital

Day 7: Trade the Andes for the Upper Amazon by private riverboat

  • Fly over the Andes to Iquitos, reachable only by air or water

  • Board your deluxe riverboat at Nauta, the end-of-the-road town on the Marañon River

  • Watch the Amazon tributary slide past panoramic windows over a Peruvian dinner

Day 8: Explore Peru's largest protected rainforest

  • Paddle up the Marañon into a rarely visited stretch of Pacaya Samiria National Reserve

  • Search the dark riverbanks by spotlight for caimans, frogs and nighthawks

  • Walk high-ground rainforest trails past walking palms and trees festooned with epiphytes

Day 9: Meet Amazon communities on a remote tributary

  • Ride skiffs up the remote Yarapa River, watching for river dolphins and squirrel monkeys

  • Meet Indigenous villagers and learn how a local shaman uses medicinal rainforest plants

Day 10: Return to Lima after your Amazon adventure

  • Tour the Aquarium of the Amazon, a research center for more than 300 ornamental fish species

  • Rest at a Lima airport hotel before your onward journey home
