Madison SawatzkyCamp Field Operations Specialist — Greenland
Madison grew up in Winnipeg, Canada, where wide prairies and long winters shaped her early connection to the natural world. Her interest in the Arctic began in childhood, drawn to its sharp contrasts—light and dark, movement and stillness—and to the wildlife that thrives in one of the planet’s most demanding environments. She spent her early years outdoors: tracking animal prints, watching the northern lights and learning to read the rhythms of the land.
She is currently pursuing a degree in environmental studies and Indigenous studies at the University of Manitoba, where her academic focus centers on northern ecosystems, land stewardship and the intersections of Indigenous knowledge and conservation science.
As a guide in the Arctic and subarctic regions, Madison strives to blend field knowledge with her thoughtful, interpretive style to emphasize curiosity, respect and context. Whether explaining permafrost dynamics or pointing out signs of recent wildlife activity, she aims to make complex systems accessible and memorable.
When not guiding, Madison is usually outdoors—taking courses to build her wilderness skills, traveling or spending time at home in Winnipeg. She values hands-on learning and seeks opportunities to expand both technical knowledge and cultural perspective.
