James Rogers
Born and raised in Alaska, James grew up at home in remote coastal landscapes. He credits both his father and the Katmai coast with shaping his connection to the outdoors. As the son of the captain of the M/V Natural Habitat Ursus, used on our grizzly adventures, he spent childhood days alongside experienced bear guides as they explored Katmai’s tide flats, salmon streams and sedge meadows. Those early years gave him a lasting respect for bears and the coastal ecosystems he now helps guests understand.
James earned a BA in tourism and hospitality from Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado. After graduation, he returned to Alaska, earned his captain’s license and continued building his knowledge of the marine and terrestrial habitats that shaped his childhood.
James’s understanding of bears comes from years in the field. He has observed their seasonal movements, feeding patterns and behavior along the Katmai coast, developing a steady approach rooted in patience and respect. When leading trips, he focuses on low-impact observation and safe, direct encounters that allow guests to watch bears without disrupting their natural rhythms.
In his free time, James enjoys photography, travel and spending time with family and friends.
