Brett Johnson
Brett was born in Calgary, Canada, where a childhood spent exploring the outdoors first sparked his connection to the natural world. Early backpacking trips with his father instilled a lasting interest in wild places and the wildlife that inhabit them.
He began his guiding career as a scuba instructor, leading dives in some of the world’s most vibrant marine environments, including the Cayman Islands.
Brett later turned his focus to the landscapes above the surface, moving to South Africa to pursue formal field guide training. There, he earned his FGASA Apprentice Field Guide rating and later qualified as an Apprentice Trails Guide, co-guiding walking safaris among Africa’s Big Five. Time spent on foot in these environments refined his ability to read the land, interpreting tracks, movement and subtle signs.
In 2021, a guiding opportunity brought Brett to Alaska, where he now calls home. Drawn to the region’s scale and wildlife, he has developed strong familiarity with its ecosystems, guiding in environments ranging from tundra to coastal habitats.
An avid photographer, Brett focuses on capturing wildlife behavior and changing light. He enjoys helping guests slow down, observe more closely and engage more deeply with the landscapes around them.
What's in My Camera Bag
Because of weight limits on some of our flights, I keep my kit intentionally minimal at just two lenses, a cleaning kit, and a spare battery. It keeps my pack light, leaves room for essentials, and ensures I’m always ready to move efficiently without sacrificing what I need.
