Portugal’s landscape offers a variety of experiences, from rugged mountains to scenic shores. July and August bring warmer temperatures to the river, while April, May, June, September and October offer cooler days. Late spring and early summer feature dry, sunny weather and blooming hillsides around the valley, with the Douro River flowing more briskly. By September and October, the atmosphere is peaceful and relaxed. During this time, you can enjoy calm waters while observing the bustling grape harvest in the vineyards. In the Douro Valley, the peak visitation period typically spans from June to September, though the eastern part of the region sees fewer visitors year-round.

From April to October, the weather in northern Portugal generally ranges from mild to warm, with conditions becoming increasingly dry and sunny during the summer months. Daytime temperatures typically vary from the mid-60s°F in spring and autumn, rising to the upper 80s or low 90s°F at the peak of summer. Evenings and mornings usually cool down into the upper 40s to low 60s°F. Water temperatures tend to hover between 65°F to 75°F, which some travelers find refreshing, though others may find it somewhat chilly. While summer months generally remain dry, there's always a chance of wind and occasional light rain showers, especially in spring (April and May) and autumn (October).

Light, casual clothing and quick-dry fabrics are ideal for this trip. Essentials for kayaking excursions include paddling gloves, sport sandals, a brimmed sun hat and long-sleeved quick-dry shirts for sun protection. A lightweight rain jacket is also recommended. Swimwear will come in handy, and some guests may prefer slightly dressier attire for certain accommodations. The Douro River is calm and has no waves, rapids or whitewater. The sections we’ll kayak have a gentle, slow-moving current, making for an easy, enjoyable experience. The only challenge might come if we encounter strong winds, but the water remains placid and manageable.

This adventure is perfect for all skill levels, as the kayaking is on calm, slow-moving water without waves or strong currents. Even if you've never kayaked before, our experienced guides will help you feel comfortable on the water. All you need is an adventurous spirit and a willingness to spend long days kayaking, and you’ll be fully able to participate.

Portuguese cuisine shares Mediterranean influences, featuring dishes rich in garlic, olive oil and fresh herbs. Breakfasts usually include fresh bread, fruit preserves, ham, cheese and eggs. Lunches and dinners often feature traditional seafood dishes such as bass, cod, clams, squid or crab, along with poultry, cheeses, seasonal vegetables and hearty starches like potatoes and rice. Portugal is also celebrated for its vast selection of unique wines. Special dietary needs can be easily accommodated on this trip.

The Upper Douro Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has a winemaking history spanning nearly two thousand years. The region is renowned for its port wines, which we’ll enjoy sampling. In addition, the Douro offers outstanding whites, reds and rosés, which we’ll enjoy with our meals along the river and at our accommodations. All of the wines we’ll enjoy are included in the trip price.

Internet access is typically available at our accommodations, but it may be slow and unreliable in remote areas, and cell service may be spotty. We encourage guests to unplug during the adventure to enjoy an immersive experience in nature.
