While our Heart of Morocco trip focuses on intimate, hidden, off-the-standard-track places, most visitors also wish to experience Morocco's fabled cities—the imperial capitals that evoke a storied past, not to mention lively contemporary life rooted in living traditions. This 6-day pre-trip extension traces a classic route through the country’s royal capitals of Rabat, Fez, Meknes and Marrakesh—a quartet of UNESCO World Heritage Sites—plus its largest metropolis and modern commercial capital, Casablanca. Collectively representing over a thousand years of history, each imperial capital was the seat of power for various dynasties. The cities showcase a rich melange of Andalusian-Moroccan architecture, vibrant medinas, bustling souks, ancient mosques and elaborate palaces.
