Rainforest to Rockies: Vancouver to Lake Louise

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive where sea, rainforest and Coast Range peaks converge

  • Arrive in a city ringed by sea, coastal rainforest and ice-clad Coast Range peaks

  • Join your Expedition Leader and fellow travelers for a welcome dinner

Day 2: Canyon country unfolds from the glass dome

  • Ride the Rocky Mountaineer's glass-dome car with full-service dining aboard to Kamloops

  • Watch the Fraser Canyon narrow at Hells Gate, where the river churns to whitewater

  • Follow the Thompson River between steep, arid slopes toward the fur-trade hub of Kamloops

Day 3: Retrace the railroad's boldest feats into the Rockies

  • Climb the Selkirks into the world's only inland temperate rainforest of red cedar

  • Curve through the Spiral Tunnels, the 1909 engineering fix on the Big Hill grade

  • Cross the Continental Divide past Yoho's Burgess Shale into Banff National Park

Day 4: Helicopter into the remote Bugaboo high country

  • Rise for dawn on Victoria Glacier reflected in Lake Louise, conditions allowing

  • Fly by helicopter into the Bugaboos to a lodge in view of Bugaboo Spire

  • Set out on your first heli-hiking excursion with the lodge's mountain guides

Days 5 to 6: Alpine meadows only a helicopter can reach

  • Lift off by helicopter to remote alpine meadows filled with summer wildflowers

  • Hike over trailless ridgelines to a picnic lunch at a scenic overlook

  • Watch for marmots, mountain goats and golden eagles, or even moose and grizzlies

Day 7: Journey's end in Canada's founding mountain park

  • Drive through Kootenay National Park, cut by the Kootenay and Vermilion rivers

  • Visit Cave and Basin, the geothermal springs where Canada's park system began

  • Cap the mountain journey with a farewell dinner in the town of Banff

Day 8: A last look at the Rockies from the prairie's edge

  • Descend from the Rockies to Calgary through pine-studded foothills and rolling prairie

  • Connect with homeward flights from Calgary
