A Change of Perspective
We talk about it at the office regularly: polar bears are an umbrella species that needs ice to survive. I’ve talked about it, I’ve studied it, I’m confident I know what it all means. Then my perspective changed.

Antarctica & Arctic
In the far North, the aurora borealis shimmers and blazes, in bright contrast with a frozen, white world below. But life can be found in the most polar of regions, and human encounters with these breathtaking Arctic animals have inspired folktales around the globe.
Churchill Polar Bears
By Nat Hab Traveler Margaret Yang | Classic Polar Bear Adventure I absolutely loved the process of looking for polar bears in the snow. I would sit next to our Polar Rover driver, Bill, and work really hard to look for bears in complete whiteness.
Churchill Polar Bears
By Nat Hab Traveler Melissa Nelson | Classic Polar Bear Adventure On our first full day out on the Polar Rover, a polar bear walked over to another vehicle in the distance, and we watched it jump up and reach all the way to the vehicle! We were super excited, and took photos…

Every Friday, we choose our favorite photo of the week from our Wildlife Photo of the Day website. This week we selected a polar bear in Churchill. Photographer Charlie Curtin captured this moment while out on the tundra off the Hudson Bay. Have you taken some amazing wildlife photos during your travels?
Churchill Polar Bears
The arctic tundra was beautiful, especially in the early morning as the sun rose. It sparkled and glittered in icy cold magic. As each day progressed, it got colder and more frozen. The wildlife of the Arctic was perfectly adapted to be there.
Nature & Wildlife
This was my first trip to the Arctic. To see polar bears in Churchill, Canada, was an experience far beyond my expectations. The trip combined wildlife viewing, appreciation of the Arctic ecosystem and the effects of climate change. I was truly moved by the abundance and variety of wildlife we witnessed.
Travel Tales
The desolate beauty of the subarctic tundra sneaks up on you, as I assume, a polar bear must—with ease and a gentle face, yet backed with tremendous power and a be-all, end-all attitude.
Nature & Wildlife
For hundreds of years, polar bears have been migrating though Churchill to make their way across the frozen Hudson Bay. I was excited to be in the “polar bear capital of the world” to see these awesome creatures but as I exited the plane I was immediately concerned by the mild temperatures.
Nature & Wildlife
Harboring one of the planet’s last great bastions of ice, East Greenland is a wild Arctic landscape. Polar bears reign over this raw terrain—an expanse of hardy tundra, jagged fjords and massive glaciers. But climate change is altering the bears’ habitat.
Travel Tips
Our first night out on the Churchill tundra got us feeling some sort of lucky. Within 10 minutes of driving, we spotted a mother polar bear and cubs off in the distance. Polar bears are my favorite animal, and I was in complete awe seeing them in their natural habitat.
