Every Friday, we choose our favorite photo of the week from our Wildlife Photo of the Day website. This week we chose a leopard in Tanzania. Last night, I watched a movie titled Merchants of Doubt. In this 2014 film, director and producer Robert Kenner lets us in on a secret that’s hiding in plain sight: there is a small—but highly paid—group of charismatic, silver-tongued “pundits” who present themselves in the media as scientific authorities, even though they have few credentials.

Leopards are notoriously opportunistic feeders, a trait that has made them the most successful big cat species in the world. In fact, in South Africa’s Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve they have been recorded eating a total of 92 different types of prey.

Leopards are, of course, among Africa’s fiercest and most cunning predators. On a typical day, a male leopard like the one in the video below might take down a big gazelle and haul it up a tree, tangle with a ferocious troupe of dagger-toothed baboons, and outmaneuver a cadre of conspiratorial hyenas.

This photo of a female leopard preparing to jump out of marula tree while a full, orange moon glows in the background was taken by guide James Tyrrell at South Africa’s Londolozi Private Game Reserve in July. Londolozi may be the most famous leopard viewing spot on the entire African continent.

The leopards of Londolozi may be the most famous leopards in the world. Their complex lineages have been carefully recorded and studied, they’ve been the focus of serious scientific inquiry, they’ve inspired documentary films and coffee table books, and they’ve thrilled thousands of guests of the private reserve over the decades.

Everyone knows a group of lions is called a pride and a bunch of elephants hanging out together is referred to as a herd. But what do you yell out when you see more than one cheetah? How about two or more leopards? Three hippos? Four hyenas?
