Day 1: Arrive in Kuching and photograph your first orangutans

  • Visit Semenggoh Orangutan Center and photograph the afternoon feeding

  • Join your Photo Expedition Leader and traveling companions for a welcome dinner

Day 2: Cruise by private boat to Bako National Park

  • Visit Bako National Park, a compact showcase of Borneo's ecological diversity

  • Photograph proboscis and silvered leaf monkeys, long-tailed macaques and myriad tropical bird species

  • Walk mangrove trails and look for smooth-coated otters and Bornean bearded pigs

Day 3: Search for endangered orangutans...and more!

  • Look for orangutans, gibbons and macaques in a protected 10,000-acre reserve

  • Stroll high above the rainforest on an elevated canopy boardwalk

  • Seek out nocturnal creatures during a nighttime rainforest walk

Day 4: Witness Borneo's conservation in action

  • Photograph orphaned orangutans climbing, foraging and preparing to survive in the wild

  • Learn about orangutan rehabilitation on a guided walk through the sanctuary

  • Take a private tour of the Sun Bear Conservation Center

Day 5: Journey into Borneo's River Wilderness

  • Visit Labuk Bay to photograph endemic proboscis monkeys in a protected mangrove sanctuary

  • Cruise the Kinabatangan River to a secluded jungle lodge accessible only by boat

  • Search for crocodiles, hornbills, night birds and other wildlife on a dusk river safari

Day 6: Photographing the wildlife of Kinabatangan

  • Look for proboscis monkeys, gibbons, macaques and, with luck, elusive orangutans along the forested riverbanks

  • Photograph prolific birdlife, including rhinoceros hornbills and colorful kingfishers

  • Learn macro photography techniques from your Expedition Leader

Day 7: Sukau, prime habitat for Borneo's pygmy elephants

  • Cruise upriver to Sukau as mangroves give way to lowland rainforest

  • Photograph Borneo's pygmy elephants where sightings are most likely

  • Search for nocturnal wildlife on a rainforest night walk with your Expedition Leader

Day 8: Experience Borneo from dawn to dusk

  • Watch the rainforest come alive on a sunrise river excursion

  • Explore Gomantong Caves, one of Borneo's largest limestone cave systems

  • Photograph hundreds of thousands of bats emerge as hawks hunt overhead at dusk

Days 9 to 11: Discover one of Earth's most biodiverse rainforests

  • Explore Danum Valley, an ancient rainforest that's never been logged

  • Photograph orangutans, gibbons, red leaf monkeys and rhinoceros hornbills amid towering dipterocarp trees

  • Enjoy a quiet night drive in an open-air electric safari vehicle, searching for lorises, civets and flying squirrels


Day 12: Savor a final morning in the rainforest

  • Take a final rainforest walk or canopy birding excursion in Danum Valley

  • Capture images of great slaty woodpeckers, giant pittas and black-and-red broadbills

  • Celebrate your Borneo adventure with a farewell dinner in Kota Kinabalu

Day 13: Depart Kota Kinabalu after your Borneo photo expedition

  • Transfer to the airport for homeward flights
