Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Ecuador’s beautifully preserved colonial capital

  • Meet your local guide upon arrival in Quito

  • Check in to a boutique hotel in Quito’s colonial quarter

Day 2: Explore the churches, plazas and flavors of colonial Quito

  • Walk the cobblestone lanes of Quito’s UNESCO-listed Old Town

  • Step inside La Compania Church to see its gold-leaf interior

  • Taste chocolate made from rare Ecuadorian cacao by a women’s cooperative

Day 3: Board the Petrel and encounter North Seymour’s seabirds

  • Settle aboard the privately chartered Natural Habitat Petrel

  • Walk among the Galapagos’ largest frigatebird colony

  • Join your second Expedition Leader upon arrival in Baltra

Day 4: Penguins, marine iguanas and young volcanic landscapes

  • Ride an electric panga past penguins and flightless cormorants

  • Watch for whales and dolphins while crossing the Bolivar Channel

  • Walk recent lava flows among basking marine iguanas

Day 5: Pirate history and volcanic shores on western Isabela

  • Snorkel beneath 19th-century pirate graffiti at Tagus Cove

  • Hike volcanic tuff cones overlooking Darwin’s Lagoon

  • Look for land iguanas along Urbina Bay’s uplifted shore

Day 6: Mangrove lagoons and wildlife among barren lava flows

  • Ride a panga through mangrove islets where sea turtles rest

  • Look for flamingos in lagoons surrounded by dark lava

  • Walk hardened lava between Sierra Negra and Cerro Azul

Day 7: Hike the rim of Sierra Negra’s immense caldera

  • Climb to the edge of the active shield volcano’s 6-mile-wide crater

  • Walk wetland trails in search of stilts, whimbrels and pintails

  • Watch for Darwin’s finches and Galapagos hawks

Day 8: Stay among wild giant tortoises at Nat Hab’s private highlands camp

  • Visit the Fausto Llerena tortoise breeding center

  • Spend the night at Nat Hab’s private Tortoise Camp

  • Look for wild tortoises wandering through the surrounding Scalesia forest

Day 9: Lava tubes and endemic wildlife on ancient Santa Fe

  • Explore lava tubes large enough for the whole group

  • Look for Santa Fe land iguanas beneath giant prickly pear cacti

  • Snorkel or paddle near a reef-rich islet off Santa Fe

Day 10: Sea lions and frigatebirds before returning to Quito

  • Visit sea lion and frigatebird colonies on Isla Lobos

  • Disembark on San Cristobal and fly to Quito
