Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Quito's preserved colonial heart

  • Check in to a boutique hotel in Quito's colonial quarter

  • Arrive in the heart of the UNESCO-listed historic Old Town

Day 2: A full day in Latin America's best-preserved colonial city

  • Tour the 16th-century Church and Convent of San Francisco

  • Step inside La Compania, its interior gleaming with gold leaf

  • Taste chocolate made from rare cacao by a women's cooperative

Day 3: Reach the Galapagos and set out among the islands

  • Sleep aboard the Nemo III, your sailing catamaran for the week

  • Walk Las Bachas, a green sea turtle nesting beach on Santa Cruz

  • Look for pink flamingos dotting the saltwater lagoons

Day 4: A collapsed volcano alive with nesting seabirds

  • Kayak the flooded crater among red-footed boobies and tropicbirds

  • Climb Prince Phillip's Steps to frigatebird and Nazca booby colonies

  • Snorkel from the beach where sea lions loll in the sun

Day 5: A night ashore among the highlands' wild tortoises

  • Walk the smooth, ropy pahoehoe lava flows of Sullivan Bay

Day 6: The science of bringing the giant tortoise back

Day 7: Raw lava and an island lifted from the sea

  • Walk hardened lava between Sierra Negra and Cerro Azul volcanoes

  • Look for flamingos and herons in the coastal lagoons

  • See where a 1954 uplift drove the shoreline out to sea

Day 8: The youngest volcano and its endemic wildlife

  • Walk among marine iguana colonies and nesting flightless cormorants

  • Snorkel for sea turtles and feeding marine iguanas

  • Search Tagus Cove for penguins below 19th-century ship graffiti

Day 9: Fur seals and tide pools on volcanic Santiago

  • Explore tide pools full of octopus, sea stars and urchins

  • Look for endemic Galapagos fur seals in the lava grottos

  • Kayak the tuff cliffs and red sand of Buccaneer's Cove

Day 10: A last morning on the water before farewells

  • Cruise by panga through the turquoise water of Black Turtle Cove

  • Watch for reef sharks, rays and sea turtles in the sheltered lagoon
