Travel Tales
The world that I look out upon from the window in my home office, here in Wisconsin, is pretty quiet right now. In other times, the interstate just beyond the woods that surrounds my house would be busy with fast-moving cars and semitrucks. But presently, only occasionally does the sound of any traffic reach me.
Alaska
Katmai National Park is a realm of untrammeled rivers, pristine streams and clear lakes. The park and the greater Alaska Peninsula are part of the Bristol Bay Watershed, which, according to World Wildlife Fund, is the most productive salmon ecosystem in North America.
Alaska
Every summer, from about mid-June to mid-October, the grizzly bears at Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park and Preserve in Alaska are featured in a live-cam show that you can watch via Explore.org. And once or twice a week during that time period, Mike Fitz, resident naturalist with Explore.org, hosts a live “chat” with the audience.
Nature & Wildlife
As a life-long Alaskan, Katmai National Park has always held a magical place in my heart. It was a land of volcanoes, bears, salmon, and green mountains plunging towards the sea. This summer, I had the opportunity to make my dream a reality with Nat Hab’s Great Alaskan Grizzly Encounter.
Nature Photography
Every Friday, we choose our favorite photo of the week from our Wildlife Photo of the Day website. This week we selected a brown bear with the catch of the day. Photographer Steve Grodin captured this moment while visiting Katmai National Park in Alaska. Have you taken some amazing wildlife photos during your travels?
Alaska
Recently, I traveled with Natural Habitat Adventures on its “Alaska Grizzly Encounter: Kodiak to Katmai.” I can now say that having the opportunity to spend time with Alaska’s big brown bears is one of the most authentic wildlife experiences any nature traveler can have.
Travel Tales
Being close enough to view a grizzly bear in the wild inspires feelings of awe and nostalgia: wonder at their size and power, and a longing for an America that once was—when the land was wild and pristine, and we newcomers were still adventurers exploring something big and far beyond anything else we had…
Alaska
Have you heard how close our groups get to the grizzly bears on our Coastal Alaska Grizzly trips? Within mere feet! And it’s not from the window of a safari vehicle, it’s on foot. I didn’t believe it when I first started working at Nat Hab…that is, until I saw video footage of it!
