Walking was a favored activity among many of our nation’s greatest nature writers and thinkers—Benjamin Franklin, Henry David Thoreau, John Muir and Albert Einstein, to name just a few—relied on daily strolls to enhance their creativity and aid their thought processes. Most of them preferred to amble in as rural a setting as possible.
Londolozi Private Game Reserve in South Africa is apparently the place to be right now. Last week, we shared a touching video of a newborn elephant calf taking its first steps in the reserve. This week,we’re happy to share an even more amazing Londolozi video and some stunning images of the birth of a Cape buffalo.

A great blue heron is one of my favorite birds to spot while canoeing in Wisconsin rivers. Largest of the North American herons, this bird has long, graceful legs; a sinuous neck; and a thick, daggerlike bill. Head, chest and wing plumes give the great blue heron a shaggy, flowing appearance.

On January 27th, scientists captured, possibly for the first time ever, a video of a rare and elusive African golden cat hunting in the daylight. The short video below, shot using a hidden camera trap, shows the cat charging and nabbing an unsuspecting red colobus monkey in Uganda’s Kibale Forest National Park.
