Polar Bears of Arctic Nunavut

Watch Polar Bears at Ground Level from a Private Wilderness Camp on Hudson Bay

When you seek an encounter with polar bears that’s as remote and powerful as possible, we’ve created this peerless adventure that takes you farther into the Canadian wild in supreme solitude. Like our other polar bear expeditions, it includes a visit to Churchill. But it doesn’t stop there: on a private chartered plane, you’ll fly north to the Territory of Nunavut—home to Canada’s Inuit people whose ancestors have lived on this stark terrain alongside polar bears for more than 4,000 years. Our base is a rustic tundra camp on the northwest edge of Hudson Bay, set in isolation on the polar bears’ fall migration route to the forming ice edge. Protected by an unobtrusive electric fence, we anticipate the bears’ approach at eye level, often at thrilling close range. Relish silence and awe on this ultimate immersion in the primal realm of the polar bear.

Whether you’ve seen the polar bears of Churchill before and long to be among them again, or you seek a first encounter that’s as wild and remote as it gets, this trips offers a unique experience you won't find elsewhere. When you choose our far-flung adventure to Nunavut, you'll get all these outstanding features:

  1. A Truly Remote Destination for Polar Bear Viewing
Most polar bear tours take place in Churchill, and while these adventures offer exciting encounters with the bears, they also occur in settings where there are plenty of people, vehicles and developed infrastructure. In contrast, this experience gets you completely away from other humans, via a 50-minute flight to the northwest edge of Hudson Bay where we are totally alone in the wild. Very few people will ever view polar bears in such a genuinely natural habitat, in complete solitude.

  2. The Ultimate Small-Group Setting: Just 8 Guests
Our Arctic adventure is limited to eight participants, housed in four private cabins at our remote tundra camp. You’re accompanied by our Expedition Leader and local guides, plus the small camp staff, but that’s it—our small coterie is alone in the wilderness, just us and the polar bears. You won’t find a more intimate context in which to watch the majestic King of the Arctic in its native terrain.

  3. Learn About Inuit Culture in Nunavut
On this journey, we leave Manitoba and fly north to the Territory of Nunavut, the Indigenous homeland with autonomous rule established for Canada’s Inuit people in 1999. With our local Inuit guides, gain insight into their millennia-old history, traditions and contemporary lifestyles in an authentic cultural setting few will experience. While polar bears may be the top attraction, our local hosts deeply enrich our experience.

  4. Comfortable Arctic Wilderness Accommodations
We spend four nights in the true “back of beyond,” an isolated camp on the tundra edging the shore of Hudson Bay. But we don’t want for comfort: individual cabins have excellent insulation, individual heat controls, warm bedding, hot showers and en suite dry toilets. And you’ll enjoy surprisingly gourmet meals served in the communal dining room, plus a comfortable lounge space with big windows offering a view on passing polar bears.

  5. Relaxed Pace & Flexibility—No Need to Conform to a Schedule
Since we’re based at our tundra camp surrounded by wild polar bear terrain, we don’t have to go anywhere. We’re in the bears’ territory 24/7—just hanging out as they come to us. No need to depart hotels, board vehicles, return to town for meals, or otherwise disturb our focus on bear viewing. The bears determine our priorities, and we adapt to whatever they are doing at any given moment.

  6. Churchill Highlights Including Dog Sledding
Just because we fly you far afield to Nunavut to view polar bears doesn’t mean you’ll miss out on the appealing town attractions in Churchill. We’ve added two days to explore its history and northern traditions, including a dog sled ride in the boreal forest, the Churchill Northern Studies Center, SeaWall murals, and the outstanding Inuit artifact collection at the Itsanitaq Museum.

  7. We Provide Heavy Parkas & Winter Boots for Your Use
No need to go spend a lot of money buying heavy outdoor gear you may use just once—we provide Arctic-style parkas and heavy-duty winter boots for your use in Churchill and Nunavut, at no cost.
