Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Madagascar, a world of wildlife found nowhere else

  • Visit the Queen's Palace on an optional city tour of Tana

  • Gather for a welcome dinner with your Expedition Leader

Days 2 to 4: First lemurs in an island rainforest

  • Track the world's largest lemur, the indri, by its eerie wailing call

  • Watch diademed sifakas leap through the forest canopy

  • Search night walks for chameleons and brown mouse lemurs

Days 5 to 6: A cloud forest park born to save a lemur

  • Search for the endangered golden bamboo lemur the park was made for

  • Hike from lowland rainforest up into misty cloud forest

  • Explore Fianarantsoa's colorful 19th-century colonial Old Town

Days 7 to 8: Canyon country in stark contrast to the rainforest

  • Watch ring-tailed lemurs forage at the Anja Community Reserve

  • Hike the eroded sandstone canyons of the Isalo massif

  • Spot the swollen pachypodia, the odd 'elephant's foot' plant

Day 9: A little-visited forest of found-only-here species

  • Look for Verreaux's sifaka and the rare Zombitse sportive lemur

  • Listen for endemic birds like the very rare Appert's tetraka

  • Explore an island of forest in a widely deforested land

Days 10 to 12: A remote private reserve where forest meets the sea

  • Fly by charter to a private reserve on the Mozambique Channel

  • Find Coquerel's sifakas, often right on the lodge grounds

  • Cruise by private boat to Moramba Bay's sea-bound limestone and baobabs

Day 13: Homeward from the island of the lemurs

  • Linger over a final breakfast at the lodge

  • Fly by charter to Antananarivo for connecting flights
