Virunga Safari Lodge
Location
Virungas National Park, Rwanda
Perched high on a ridge overlooking the Virunga Volcanoes, Musanze Valley and Lakes Bulera and Ruhondo, Virunga Lodge is one of Rwanda’s most established and sought-after gorilla lodges. Built in 2004, the lodge commands sweeping views in every direction, with mist rising over volcanic peaks at dawn and the lakes shimmering far below. It remains a leading base for trekking endangered mountain gorillas and rare golden monkeys in nearby Volcanoes National Park.
The main lounge building is the site of evening socializing as guests gather to dine on varied, hearty meals around a central table and relax in the bar to trade stories of the day’s adventures around the cozy firepit. A local Indore tribal dance group performs regularly. The attentive staff offers exceptional hospitality, even taking guests’ muddy hiking boots for cleaning after gorilla treks.
The lodge’s hand-built bandas each feature a private terrace oriented toward either the volcanoes or the twin lakes. Interiors blend Rwandan craftsmanship with understated comfort: woven textiles, hand-carved furnishings and fireplaces that warm cool mountain evenings. Each banda includes an en suite bathroom with hot running water and flush toilets, along with comfortable seating areas ideal for unwinding after gorilla treks.
Wellness is integrated into the experience at Ikirunga Spa & Sauna, where complimentary treatments include the signature Rungu massage. Sustainability and community engagement are central to the lodge’s ethos, with initiatives such as “One Sheep per Family,” water tank donations and support for local cultural programs reinforcing its long-standing commitment to conservation and community partnership.
