Location
Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy, Kenya
Rising from the forested slopes of Kenya’s Matthews Range, this thatched-roof, off-grid ecolodge features houses suspended on stilts among acacia trees. “Sarara” means “meeting place” in Samburu, the language of the local people, and the retreat encourages connection through an inviting combination of whimsy and comfort. An infinity pool overlooks a clearing where wildlife often gathers at dusk, and nearby, Reteti Elephant Sanctuary offers a rare look at community-led conservation in motion.
Spacious treehouses elevated in the acacia canopy open to birdsong, filtered sunlight and wind rustling through branches. Canvas walls and netted windows bring the outside in, while private verandas offer uninterrupted views over the forest. Each dwelling has wood floors, indoor flush toilet and outdoor, solar-heated shower. Furnishings are simple but deliberate: handwoven textiles, hardwood furniture and smooth stone basins bathrooms. Wooden walkways connect the suites to central spaces, allowing guests to navigate the treetops with ease.
Meals showcase local produce and East African flavors and are served communally in the central dining area or outdoors under a sky dense with stars. Menus change daily and accommodate dietary needs with care and creativity.
Sarara runs entirely on solar power and employs staff from surrounding villages. Revenue supports education, wildlife protection and sustainable livelihoods for the Samburu. Every stay helps fund these efforts.
