Punakha River Lodge
Location
Punakha Valley, Bhutan
Set on a quiet curve of the Mo Chhu River in Bhutan’s Punakha Valley, this lodge immerses guests in a landscape of forested mountains, tiered rice paddies and traditional farmhouses. Reached via a suspended bridge, the property feels like a hidden sanctuary. Architecture blends Bhutanese tradition—whitewashed stone, pitched roofs and timber detailing—with clean lines and open-air design.
Shared spaces flow into the outdoors—open-sided lounges and dining areas overlook Himalayan peaks. An interactive kitchen invites connection over steaming momos or simmering broths, while the riverside pool reflects shifting skies. A spa beside an orchard offers hot stone baths and Bhutanese massage. Yoga is held in a glass-walled studio with foothill views, and twilight feasts unfold in the outdoor kitchen.
Tented suites stand on stilts among riverbank trees and cane fields, each angled for privacy and wide-open views. Canvas walls and sloped ceilings frame hand-planed wood floors, wool rugs in muted tones and altar tables carved by local artisans. Beds are layered with crisp cotton, yak-wool throws and Bhutanese pillows. Copper soaking tubs and open-air rain showers define the serene bath areas. Each suite includes air conditioning, a wood stove, minibar, Wi-Fi and a private deck that captures the valley’s stillness.
The culinary program highlights seasonal, local ingredients cooked in open kitchens or over open flames. Sample Bhutanese red rice, fiery ema datshi or river fish grilled in banana leaves.
Built with stone and reclaimed wood, the lodge runs on solar power, composts waste and avoids single-use plastics while supporting nearby farms and artisans.
