Hotel Ur Bare
Location
Zarautz, Spain
In the Basque surf town of Zarautz, this restored 1940s villa overlooks the sea, nestled between green hills and the beach. In the intimate light-filled lobby, white wooden beams line the ceilings. Plaster walls, natural stone, woven fixtures and a seating area with understated sofas and leather furniture create a tranquil atmosphere. A lattice of thousands of ceramic pieces separates the restaurant and bar. Arched windows and skylights let coastal sun pour in.
Guest rooms feature oak floors, natural textiles and sea or garden views. Rooms have king beds, Wi-Fi and coffeemakers; some have private balconies and bathtubs. En suite bathrooms have floor-to-ceiling zellige tile, walk-in showers and concrete countertops.
The dining terrace was built around a mature magnolia tree that rises through a skylight in the zinc and terracotta roof. Meals are served on the terrace overlooking the sea, with menus including turbot, clams in green sauce, and roasted peppers with cured egg yolk and Cantabrian tuna belly. An extensive wine cellar offers regional selections.
On a tiered hillside terrace, the pool overlooks Zarautz Beach and the rolling waves beyond. Lounge chairs line the pool, while secluded courtyard nooks offer additional seating. A sleek gym has vaulted ceilings and skylights. Sustainability measures include using triple-glazed windows, upgraded insulation and natural materials such as lime plaster and terracotta.
