Palm River Hotel
Location
Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe
Set on the banks of the upper Zambezi River, just upstream from Victoria Falls, this riverside retreat sits within a canopy of jackalberry and palm trees, where garden paths lead toward shaded terraces and wide river views. The hotel’s design draws from the airy proportions of Queenslander architecture, with deep verandas, timber accents and open lounges positioned to catch the breeze off the water. In the early morning, mist drifts across the riverbank while hippos surface offshore and the distant sound of the Falls rolls through the trees.
Guest rooms open onto private balconies overlooking the Zambezi or the gardens, creating a constant connection to the landscape outside. Interiors combine clean contemporary lines with warm wood finishes and neutral textiles. Each room includes a writing desk, fixed luggage storage, bedside reading lamps and a fully equipped tea and coffee station. Bathrooms feature double vanities, walk-in rainfall showers and generous wardrobe space. Amenities include Wi-Fi, air conditioning, robes, blackout drapery and international plug points.
The main restaurant centers on the riverfront, with parquet floors, tall ceilings and sliding glass doors opening onto shaded patios beneath indigenous trees. Menus draw from local ingredients and regional flavors, from grilled Zambezi bream to flame-cooked meats prepared over open coals. The riverside dining deck hosts barbecue dinners beneath the stars, often accompanied by mbira music and sightings of elephants or buffalo along the opposite bank. Afternoon tea with pastries, cakes and coffee is served daily for in-house guests.
Additional amenities include a river-facing spa offering botanical massages and aromatherapy treatments, along with a gym equipped with rowing machines, stationary bikes, free weights and yoga equipment. Sustainability initiatives include solar and hydroelectric power, borehole water sourcing, recycling programs and low-impact riverside construction designed to protect wildlife habitats along the Zambezi River.
