Kakuli Bushcamp
Location
South Luangwa National Park, Zambia
Located on a ridge in the central Luangwa Valley overlooking a broad bend in the river, this camp faces a shifting landscape of sandbanks, winterthorn woodland and shallow channels where elephants descend to the water and hippos remain half-submerged through the heat of the day. The elevated setting gives the property unusually wide views across the valley, particularly during the dry season when animals gather along the riverbanks below.
Guests stay in thatched huts built from woven reed and topped with thick grass roofs. Interiors are airy and understated, with pale canvas, woven textures, mosquito-netted beds—two twins or a king—and wide screened openings positioned to catch the breeze moving up from the river. Each hut opens onto a private verandah furnished with a hanging swing and views stretching across the river corridor. Bathrooms include both indoor and outdoor showers.
At the center of camp, the chitenge functions as a gathering place throughout the day, with a lounge, library, bar and dining spaces arranged beneath a broad thatched roof beside a permanent waterhole. Early mornings begin with coffee before walks and drives, while evenings settle into long communal dinners and drinks around the fire. Meals draw from seasonal produce and regional ingredients, with river fish, grilled vegetables, slow-cooked meats and house-baked breads appearing regularly on the menu.
