Easy to Moderate
Tracking wolves in Yellowstone typically occurs in snowy, icy and/or wet conditions, and temperatures can be extremely cold, often dropping well below zero at night with daytime highs in the 30s. Our days generally start before sunrise and are very full with activities. Hikes and snowshoe excursions require moderate physical exertion. They range from one to three miles in length over level ground and slight inclines, though snow and ice may create rough and/or challenging terrain conditions. In order to view Old Faithful, participants must be able to walk 300 yards over icy, snowy pavement and boardwalk. To explore Yellowstone’s geothermal basins, you must be able to walk at least one-half to one mile over ice- and snow-covered boardwalk, dirt trails and pavement. If you opt to snowshoe, you must be able to snowshoe at least a half-mile. The maximum potential distance for snowshoeing is two miles. While much of our wildlife viewing takes place from our vehicles, participants should be prepared to spend extended periods of time outside in very cold temperatures. While travelers are not required to participate in all activities, if you should opt out of any of the day’s scheduled activities, we cannot guarantee that alternatives will be available. Travelers should be aware that activities in the park occur at altitudes between 4,810 and 7,380 feet.
Important Information About This Trip
This trip combines the rare chance to view wolves in the wild with an all-encompassing adventure in one of North America’s most celebrated wildlife destinations: Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks. Travelers should understand that even though to date we have had a 100-percent wolf sighting rate on our trips, these are very elusive animals, and they may or may not come into the open or within close range. Much of our wolf viewing is done at a distance through spotting scopes, offering a chance to watch the wolves go about their normal behavior. For those considering the photo tour, please keep in mind that since this trip offers a totally natural, uncontrived experience, the wolves are often far in the distance. A long lens is a must, and even then, we can't guarantee excellent shots. However, the sheer beauty and winter grandeur of Grand Teton and Yellowstone national parks provides magnificent nature imagery, and we are likely to see plenty of other wildlife, too. On some dates, our itinerary operates in the reverse order of what is listed on our trip page. Please contact our office for details.
