In the world of big game safaris, our attention is too often consumed by the great carnivores: the big cats, the wild dogs, the wolves and bears. Deer, antelope and other “lesser” herbivores are frequently dismissed as “prey base.” Are these animals more than just items on the tiger’s dinner menu? Absolutely! India is blessed with a spectacular array of wild ungulates (hoofed mammals). The country is home to the world’s second-fastest land animal, the blackbuck (bet you didn’t know that), the stately sambar deer, the diminutive mouse deer, the gorgeous spotted deer and the massive gaur and wild buffalo...even gravity-defying blue sheep! In today’s webinar with Expedition Leader Aditya Panda, meet these under-appreciated beauties with exotic names like chital, sambar, muntjac, chevrotain and barasingha—and discover how they can be just as exciting to watch and photograph as the more famous carnivores that hunt them. Aditya also helps us understand how these less-appreciated game animals are key to saving the world’s ecosystems and the predators they share them with.
