Sofia was born and raised in Mexico City, where early exposure to nature, travel and the arts sparked a lifelong interest in environmental education and conservation. Drawn to the ocean at a young age, she developed a strong curiosity about marine ecosystems and the relationship between people and the natural world.

She earned a degree in oceanography from the Universidad Autonoma de Baja California in Ensenada. Building on her scientific training, Sofia later completed postgraduate studies in wildlife management and socio-environmental project design, earning a master’s degree focused on conservation planning and community engagement.

Sofia began her professional career in 1999 as a naturalist at a gray whale watching camp in San Ignacio Lagoon, Baja California Sur. That same year, she relocated to Puerto Vallarta, where she led educational humpback whale watching tours and guided birding excursions, kayaking trips and interpretive nature walks. Since 1998, she has collaborated with national and international nonprofit organizations dedicated to conservation, including Sociedad Audubon de México, Pronatura and Wildcoast/Costa Salvaje. Sofia’s guiding style emphasizes curiosity, respect for nature and shared discovery, encouraging travelers to remain open-minded and engaged in every environment.

Sofia lives in the East Cape region of Baja California Sur, near an important humpback whale nursing area. In her free time, she enjoys birdwatching, walking in desert and forest landscapes and practicing cooking, pottery, painting and drawing.
