Born and raised in Uganda in a family of tour guides, Mark jokes that becoming a guide may have been less a career choice than a case of “genetic coding.” He has worked throughout Uganda’s national parks and in Rwanda for more than a decade, developing extensive knowledge of the region’s forest and savannah ecosystems. His expertise encompasses birds, mammals and primates, while his background as a bird guide has given him a particular appreciation for details that often go unnoticed, like identifying species by their calls. His career has included working as a guide trainer and assessor and conducting wildlife monitoring collecting bird call data as a research assistant. For him, good guiding is not simply about identifying a species, but about helping people understand what makes it remarkable and how it fits into the ecosystem.

In the field, Mark brings curiosity, humor and an easygoing approach to each expedition. He enjoys making complex subjects accessible, while his attention to logistical details helps journeys unfold seamlessly. Above all, he enjoys cultivating relationships with the people he guides—believing that some of the best moments in an expedition come from sharing an experience rather than simply observing it.

He is especially drawn to the contrast between Uganda’s lush forests, including Bwindi, and the expansive savannahs of Murchison Falls. When Mark isn't guiding, he enjoys meeting new people, spending time with family and reading graphic novels.
