Daniel Blankenheim2022
Daniel grew up in the Ruhrgebiet, one of Europe’s largest industrial regions, where frequent visits to a small farm sparked a deep bond with animals. Time spent with sheep, chickens and rabbits drew him toward landscape ecology, which he later studied at university. After graduation he headed to New Zealand for a year, fulfilling a dream inspired by the Lord of the Rings films. There he swam with wild dolphins, watched penguins and orcas from shore and saw how the will to protect nature often begins with a changed heart. New Zealand also ignited his passion for paddle sports and photography when he bought his first DSLR and began experimenting with light, wildlife and wild coasts.
Back in Europe, Daniel completed a master’s degree in wildlife ecology and management in Vienna and carried out thesis research in northern Greece on brown bears and human-wildlife conflict. Convinced that conservation depends on touching people’s souls, he took a guiding role at an ecolodge in Thailand. He was also inspired to become a Paddlesport Leader after canoeing 40 days through the Yukon Territory, witnessing the aurora borealis swirl over a vast northern river as wolves howled in the distance. Daniel then spent a year in the Democratic Republic of the Congo on a research project habituating wild bonobos.
Since 2022 Daniel has divided his time between Iceland and Portugal guiding for Nat Hab. Beginning in 2024 he also returned regularly to the DRC, where he mentors local guides to become Expedition Leaders. Through his images and stories he hopes to instill what Albert Schweitzer called “reverence for life,” helping travelers see their own place within the living world.
In his free time Daniel enjoys reading, writing, watching movies and the greatest game of all—European football—among other sports.
What's in My Camera Bag
Packing light makes me smile bright! I love to travel, but on multiple-day hikes, I can feel every extra gram. I don´t want to leave my beloved camera behind, so I need the best balance between quality optics and lightweight gear that I can bring everywhere! Because I want to be flexible and inconspicuous, I chose a bag-in-bag system.

What Our Guests Say
There isn't enough space to explain what a truly superlative job Daniel did! No matter the situation or location, he was cheerful, energetic, and able to help and provide info. His breadth of knowledge and true love for the plants and landscapes of Iceland came through in everything he said, and his passion for travel, adventure, wildlife and conservation shone for us the entire trip. Throughout the trip, Daniel checked in with each of us numerous times to confirm we were having fun and to address any concerns we might have. The trip was great, because Iceland is great, but Daniel took something great and made it AMAZING.
Daniel is an exceptional leader. His knowledge about the geology, plant and animal life, history and Iceland itself is extensive. More than that, he has the ability to connect with all the tour participants, listens to and appreciates their needs, and works very hard to maximize each traveler's experience. He is extremely kind and attends to all the details both large and small that help make a trip special. He works very well with the local guides. Overall, the trip was exceptional both due to the fascinating country of Iceland, but also to Daniel's excellent leadership.
Daniel is an outstanding guide. He is personable, cheerful, courteous and service-oriented. He takes every task seriously and thoughtfully and offered helpful suggestions throughout our trip. I have 17 National Geographic Expeditions and 3 Nat Hab adventures under my belt, and Daniel ranks right up there with the best Expedition Leaders from both outfits. He is a wonderful representative for Nat Hab!
