Iceland: Circling the Land of Fire & Ice

Accommodations

Please Note: The hotels below are exemplary of the accommodations we use in Iceland. Specific hotel details will be confirmed in your final trip documents.
Hotel Reykjavik Saga
Location
Reykjavik, Iceland

This elegant new 4-star hotel in the heart of Reykjavik opened in July 2022. Located on Laekjargata, a historic street in the city center, the hotel has been designed with full respect to the surrounding buildings in a sharp-angled modern style that also pays homage to Icelandic tradition. The 130 guest rooms are designed with boutique ambience, with varying layouts and furnishings. The feel is sleek and contemporary, with sharp lines and a crisp black and white palette. Rooms are well appointed with large, comfortable beds, stylish bathrooms done in marble and black tile, flat screen satellite TV, free Wi-Fi, telephone, writing desk, safe, coffee and tea maker. Inside the hotel is the excellent restaurant Froken Reykjavik Kitchen & Bar. Two large roof terraces as well as an outdoor patio and glass atrium offer access to the fresh Icelandic air. A gym and spa with steam bath and sauna offer guests an opportunity to work out or relax alike.
Hotel Kria
Location
Vik, Iceland

In the Land of Ice and Fire, Hótel Kría beckons our gaze to the skies, where thousands of arctic terns fly from Antarctica to nest under the Midnight Sun. In Icelandic—“kría”—undergo the longest migration of any species; an apt name for a hotel and the perfect base for Nat Hab travelers to rest their wings after a long journey North.

Located beside the famous Ring Road in the southern village Vík and beneath a moss-covered mountain, Kría’s modern architecture and Nordic design elegantly frame the surrounding landscape. The hotel’s interior evokes the moodiness of a misty morning, with cool gray and silver stone, freshened by a variety of indoor botanical features. The romantic atmosphere is enhanced by lounge areas draped in dark velvet fabric, warm wooden accents and the glow of each floor’s fireplaces.

Visit the gaming room, complete with table tennis, darts and billiards, then venture to the cocktail bar for Happy Hour and try some Icelandic-produced liqueurs. Floor to ceiling windows complement your culinary journey at the Drangar Restaurant, as you dine on the highest quality seasonal ingredients, such as Arctic char, lamb and for dessert, white chocolate skyr.

End the night in one of the hotel’s cozy rooms—a Standard Double, Mountain View or Suite, which has a king-sized bed, lounge area and a bathtub. All rooms are equipped with lofty duvets, black-out curtains, sound-proofed walls, premium toiletries, a hairdryer, a flatscreen tv, a large desk, coffee and tea and ample storage space.

September departures could catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. To increase those odds, the receptionist will happily add guests to the aurora wake-up call list upon request! Awaken to a complementary continental breakfast buffet and walk over to the black-sand beach, Reynisfjara to observe resident puffins and terns. Continue to Reynisdrangar, a trio of basalt sea stack columns, said to be trolls who were turned to stone at daybreak.
Lilja Guesthouse
Location
Hofn, Iceland

Opened in 2017 near Hornafjordur, this hospitable family-owned and run guesthouse enjoys an optimal location in southeast Iceland where Vatnajokull, Europe’s largest glacier, dominates the landscape. It is centrally located for easy access to the many spectacular sights along the south coast, including Vatnajokull National Park and the glacier lagoons. Two separate single-story buildings—one classic and one contemporary—house 26 guestrooms, all flooded with bountiful natural light and surrounded by wild mountain scenery and farmland. Decor embraces a minimalist Nordic aesthetic, with clean, contemporary lines, spare (yet eminently comfortable) furnishings, and a pale neutral palette with plenty of light wood. Rooms have single beds and European duvets for each guest, and two can be pushed together to form one king-size bed. Bedside tables have reading lamps, and each room has a writing desk, clothing rack, luggage stand and blackout curtains. All have en suite bathrooms with private toilet, shower and hair dryer. Free Wi-Fi- is available throughout the property. A lavish buffet breakfast is served each morning, while in the evenings, the restaurant serves dinner featuring Icelandic fare with a modern twist, including such specialties as traditional fish stew, fresh-caught local cod, smoked lamb and skyr cheesecake.
Fjalladyrd Guesthouse
Location
Modrudalur, Iceland

Country guesthouses are the most common form of accommodation in Iceland's rural regions, offering simple, comfortable furnishings and warm hospitality. Fjalladyrd Guesthouse enjoys a remote location in Modrudalur, the highest farm in Iceland at 1,539 feet and one of the earliest settled areas in the country. The name "Fjalladyrd" means "mountain beauty," and it's an apt description its location in the highlands north of Vatnajokull Glacier, with the snowy summits of the Kverkfjoll Mountains visible on clear days. Though simple, our accommodations offer a peaceful setting and authentic taste of rural Icelandic life, not to mention proximity to the nature sights we visit in the region.

Two separate houses with traditional sod roofs accommodate seven guests each in single and double rooms with private bathrooms and showers. Knotty pine walls and rustic country decor lend a cozy ambience, while a log fireplace in the living room invites relaxing. Fjallakaffi is the guesthouse's coffee house and restaurant on the premises, whose traditional specialties include home-baked cakes, Icelandic donuts called "kleinur," and the hearty lamb and vegetable soup that is an Icelandic favorite. On the surrounding farm, guests may see elements of traditional Icelandic rural culture, including turf houses, grazing sheep and sustainable, low-tech farming operations.
Fosshotel Myvatn
Location
Lake Myvatn, Iceland

This modern hotel's hillside location overlooking Lake Myvatn offers the ideal location for exploring this volcanic area rich in geological wonders and migratory birdlife. Built in 2017 and designed by award-winning architects, Fosshotel Myvatn features almost exclusively low-environmental-impact materials. The low-rise building is clad with larch wood and a sod roof, creating harmony with nature. Interiors blend natural fibers in gray, taupe and orange with warm woods to create an aesthetic that is contemporary yet cozy. Furnishings include mid-century modern chairs and button sofas, and beds have heavy cotton-clad European-style duvets keep guests warm at night. Rooms have free Wi-Fi and flat screen TVs. Bathrooms have glass walk-in showers with overhead rain showers and handheld showerheads, as well as towel warmers and hair dryers. Floor-to-ceiling windows in the restaurant offer views over Lake Myvatn and the surrounding lava fields.
Hotel Isafjordur
Location
Isafjordur, Iceland

Centrally located in this small port town that is the commercial center for the Westfjords, Hotel Isafjordur offers simple, modern, clean-lined accommodations with a minimalist Scandinavian aesthetic. A light neutral palette of gray, beige and white provides tranquil surroundings. Rooms overlook the inner harbor or offer a view north across the bay of Isafjardardjup. Room amenities include showers, hair dryers, television, telephone, free Wi-Fi and coffee maker. A deluxe continental breakfast includes a wide selection of cheeses, cold meats, bread, hard-boiled eggs, cereals, yogurt and juices.
