The Whispering Pine Lodge

Location
Loch Lochy, near Fort William, Scotland

Set in Scotland’s Great Glen region on the shores of Loch Lochy, this restored Highlands lodge dates to the 1800s, when it was built as a private family hunting lodge by the McMartins of Letterfinlay clan. In the mid-20th century it became a hotel called Letterfinlay Lodge, popular with visitors from England and Germany who would come to the Highlands to hunt, fish and enjoy the refined country life. Today, the 25-room property welcomes guests who come in search of wild Highland nature and fresh air.

Its fire-warmed lobby lounge features overstuffed sofas and panoramic views of the loch beyond. The lodge offers direct access to the lake and a network of walking trails into the surrounding pine forest. Guest rooms are spacious yet cozy, with warm wood floors, wainscoting and tartan wallpaper and accents. Each is uniquely furnished with antiques, from intricately carved wooden beds to vintage armoires, and some have gas fireplaces with cast-iron detailing. Luxurious goose-down duvets, crisp white cotton linens and soft throws adorn the beds, while large windows frame sweeping views of the natural exterior. Large bathrooms have either a deep soaking tub with shower, or a walk-in shower. Additional amenities include a flat screen TV and electronic safe.

The lodge’s waterside brasserie offers an elevated dining experience focused on Scottish, international and Asian-fusion dishes made with locally sourced fish and meats. A casual grill serves wood-fired pizzas and cocktails on the outdoor deck, and the Burns Bar is a dark and intimate watering hole where you can savor a wee dram at day’s end. The lodge also has a rejuvenating spa with therapy rooms, a fitness center with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the lake, and an outdoor barrel sauna and hot tub that also enjoy a grand water view.
