Tundra Train
Location
Winnipeg to Churchill, Manitoba
Important note: Due to ongoing major track repair south of Churchill, 2018 train departures will go only as far as Thompson, where travelers will transfer to an onward flight to Churchill. We anticipate that the full length of the rail line to Churchill will be operational for 2019 departures. The dome car will not be available on 2018 trains to Thompson.
Our VIA Rail journey through the Canadian North takes us across a variety of changing habitats, from sprawling prairie to boreal forest to open subarctic tundra as we travel 1,000 miles from urban Winnipeg to the frontier outpost town of Churchill on Hudson Bay. A glass dome car (2019 dates only) offers a broad panorama of the passing scenery, providing travelers a modern mode of transport that's reminiscent of days gone by. Sleeping aboard is part of the fun, and while our private en suite cabins are small, they are more spacious than you might expect, and very comfortable. Each cabin has large windows (look for the northern lights from your own private space), a well-appointed bed, plus private toilet and sink facilities, with showers down the corridor. Meals are taken in the dining car, as we survey the passing landscape along the Canadian National and Hudson Bay railway lines.
