The Wildbirch Hotel

Location
Anchorage, Alaska

Anchorage is a practical gateway to Alaska rather than a city known for distinctive hotels. Most accommodations are fairly conventional, and travelers looking for a property with some personality have limited choices. Wildbirch is our preferred option for guests who want something with character. It is funky, contemporary, distinctly Alaskan and considerably more interesting than the typical Anchorage hotel. The tradeoff is its setting on a busy downtown street. While the location is convenient, the property is not particularly quiet or scenic.

About 15 minutes from Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport and within walking distance of restaurants, shops and attractions including the Anchorage Museum, Alaska Public Lands Information Center, Ship Creek and Delaney Park, Wildbirch has a stylish, creative feel. Clean lines, natural wood, lots of glass and an eclectic collection of local art define the interiors, with murals, unusual installations and works by Alaskan artists throughout. The light-filled lobby has comfortable modern seating and views toward Knik Arm, creating an inviting place to relax with coffee or a cocktail.

Guest rooms continue the contemporary, slightly funky aesthetic with wood and leather accents, comfortable seating and large windows overlooking Knik Arm or the Anchorage skyline. Rooms have either one king or two queen beds, quality linens, a writing desk, charging ports, high-speed Wi-Fi, a mini fridge, espresso maker and electronic safe.

The on-site restaurant, Crimson, draws inspiration from sunsets over Cook Inlet and serves Alaskan ingredients with Pan-American and Latin influences, while the bar features beers from Anchorage’s Midnight Sun Brewing Company. A small gift shop showcases work by local artists and artisans. Wildbirch is not a secluded Alaska retreat, nor should travelers expect it to be. It is an urban hotel on a busy street. But in a city where appealing hotel choices are surprisingly scarce, it stands out for travelers who value character, style and a sense of place.
