Renvyle House Hotel, Ireland
On Connemara’s rugged Atlantic coast, this historic country house sits between a private freshwater lake and the shoreline, surrounded by a 150-acre estate of native oak and birch woodland, meadows and gardens. Guests can kayak or row across the lake, follow coastal and woodland trails, swim from the private beach or soak in hot tubs overlooking the Atlantic. The original “Big House,” built in 1822 using timber from a local shipwreck, hosted guests including W.B. Yeats and painter Augustus John before being destroyed during the Irish Civil War. Rebuilt as a hotel in the 1920s, the Arts and Crafts-style house has a slate roof and low, understated profile. Intimate lounges are warmed by turf fires, with brickwork, wood paneling and windows overlooking lawns that descend toward the water.
Guest rooms feature locally made oak furniture and textiles woven in County Tipperary; some bathrooms incorporate distinctive green Connemara marble. The estate also has a heated outdoor pool and tennis courts. The restaurant sources ingredients from local farms, fishing boats and the hotel gardens, including Irish beef, Connemara lamb and Killary mussels alongside herbs and salad greens grown onsite.
Part of the estate lies within an EU-designated Special Area of Conservation, providing habitat for otters, badgers, hares and song thrushes. Sustainability efforts include rewilded meadows, wetland preservation, a native orchard and a native Irish Black Bee apiary that uses treatment-free beekeeping practices. Renvyle has also planted more than 4,500 native rowan, oak, birch, alder and Scots pine saplings to establish new woodland and increase local biodiversity.
