Pousada Mosteiro do Crato
Location
Crato, Portugal
Set in a former 14th-century monastery, this retreat offers a stay shaped by stone, quiet and centuries-old architecture. Once a fortress, church and convent, the property has been converted into a small hotel where modern additions sit naturally within the medieval structure. Historic corridors and light-filled contemporary passages link the wings, creating a calm setting where history and modern comfort coexist.
The monastery’s original cloisters now lead to lounges, a bar and a formal dining room, all housed within the preserved stonework. Outside, a small pool rests against ancient walls and overlooks fields and tiled rooftops. Gardens, courtyards and a terrace provide space to walk or sit in the sun. Interiors remain simple and restrained, with an emphasis on natural light and the building’s original materials.
Guest rooms feature exposed stone and tall beamed ceilings. Large windows brighten the rooms, which include either a king bed or two twins and a private balcony with wide views of the Alentejo plains. Each room has a desk and chair, flat-screen TV, electronic safe, air conditioning, WiFi with USB access and a full bath.
The restaurant highlights traditional Alentejo dishes made with local ingredients and regional wines. Offerings may include pork tenderloin with coriander, sheep’s cheese or acorda, an herbed bread soup. Breakfast is served buffet-style in the old monks’ dining hall.
The hotel operates within a heritage structure, reducing new construction and land use. Regional materials, local sourcing and passive design features support a low-impact approach rooted in preservation.
