MACq 01 Hotel
Location
Hobart, Tasmania, Australia
Set on Macquarie Wharf along Hobart’s working waterfront, MACq 01 channels Tasmania’s past into a contemporary luxury setting. Conceived as a storytelling hotel, it draws on the island’s defining characters, from the seafaring First Tasmanians to whalers, convicts and shipbuilders who shaped the port. The architecture references the shipping shed that once stood here, with industrial forms balanced by timber, stone and burnished metal. In the Lounge, a circular open fireplace crafted by a local stonemason anchors the space, its glow reflecting off polished floors and leather seating. Displays of traditional Aboriginal tools crafted by Aboriginal makers today connect the design to living culture.
Guest rooms continue the narrative, each inspired by one of five Tasmanian character traits. Large-scale murals of local landscapes rise behind plush king-size beds dressed in crisp cotton linens and textured throws. Private balconies add fresh air and openness, while streamlined furnishings and warm materials create a composed, residential feel. En suite bathrooms feature walk-in showers, generous vanities and premium bath amenities. Amenities include Wi-Fi, large flatscreen TV, wireless speaker, minibar, climate control, in-room safe and tea and coffee facilities.
Old Wharf Restaurant highlights regional produce with dishes such as Cape Grim beef and freshly shucked oysters, alongside seasonal menus. Two bars focus on Tasmanian wines, craft beers and cocktails made with local spirits.
A commitment to local sourcing guides the hotel’s partnerships with Tasmanian farmers, fishers and artisans, with regional materials integrated throughout the design.
