Ikh Nart Rocks Ger Camp

Location
Dornogobi Province, Eastern Gobi, Mongolia

Set beside the granite formations of Ikh Nartiin Chuluu Nature Reserve in Mongolia’s Eastern Gobi, this remote camp is built around traditional Mongolian gers—fully collapsible, handcrafted and spaced across the steppe to blend into the surrounding terrain. Vehicles remain outside the camp boundary, so wind, bird calls and the occasional bleating of livestock are the only noise sources. Guest gers extend outward from a central dining and lounge ger, where hand-painted woodwork, woven rugs and lantern light create a warm gathering space. Outdoor seating is arranged around the rocks for uninterrupted views of the hills and plains.

Each guest ger includes two curtained twin beds with cotton linens, camel wool blankets and thick duvets for cold nights. Interiors are simple but thoughtfully detailed—wooden chests, low stools, wool carpets and plank flooring. Solar lanterns provide soft lighting, and each ger is heated by a wood stove. Shower gers are naturally lit through the toono (roof crown) and equipped with bucket showers warmed over a fire. Composting toilets are odorless and tucked just far enough from camp to feel private, using a natural system for waste breakdown.

Meals are served communally in the main ger, often featuring handmade buuz dumplings, lentil stew with fresh bread or barley porridge in the mornings. Vegetarian and vegan meals are available and prepared with local ingredients. Trails, rock formations and archaeological sites—petroglyphs, burial mounds and ruined monasteries—surround the camp. Argali sheep, Siberian ibex and cinereous vultures are often seen. Guests can borrow binoculars or browse the library. Evenings are quiet, with occasional storytelling or stargazing from the ridge.

The camp is built for minimal impact. It runs on solar power, uses wood sparingly, separates and packs out all waste and leaves no permanent footprint. It closes each season and is dismantled completely. Operations are run in collaboration with local herding communities and conservation partners to support long-term protection of the Ikh Nart ecosystem.
