Location
Purmamarca, Jujuy, Argentina

At 7,600 feet in the valley of Quebrada de Humahuaca, this monastery-inspired hotel is tucked against the base of Purmamarca’s Hill of Seven Colors. Surrounded by mature trees, cacti, gardens and lawns, the colonial-style white adobe building features rounded archways and long tiled corridors. In the lobby, terracotta floors, wrought-iron chandeliers, a fireplace and traditional furnishings create a cozy, intimate atmosphere, while sweeping wooden-beamed verandas overlook the multicolored hills.

Spacious guest rooms have high, cane-lined ceilings, tile floors, colonial furnishings and green-shuttered windows with views of the gardens or mountains. Each has one king or two twin beds, Wi-Fi and an en suite bathroom. Televisions and audio equipment are intentionally omitted to preserve the tranquility that inspired the hotel’s name, which translates to Wellspring of Silence.

The restaurant serves Andean specialties such as llama, mountain trout, quinoa and native potatoes, as well as afternoon tea featuring Andean herbal blends. A large outdoor pool is surrounded by lawns and patio furniture, while a stone-paved terrace and park benches offer places to take in the views. In a rounded stone building with curved floor-to-ceiling windows, the spa includes a dry sauna, steam bath and a large Jacuzzi overlooking the multicolored hills. A botanical trail meanders through the grounds, where plaques with QR codes help identify native plants such as cardon cacti, molle trees and queñoa. Sustainability initiatives include recycling, refillable toiletries and locally sourced ingredients.
