Gros Morne Inn

Location
Shoal Brook, Newfoundland, Canada

This boutique ecolodge was newly built in 2022 with a mission to bring sustainable luxury to the rugged wilds of northern Newfoundland. Crafted from repurposed materials and set on eight forested acres with mountain and ocean views, the inn has plenty of gathering spaces for enjoying nature, including a grand patio for morning coffee, evening cocktails and dark night-sky viewing. A network of trails traverses the property, and guests will enjoy returning to the deluxe outdoor spa space, featuring cedar hot tubs and a Western cedar barrel sauna with a full-size dome window.

Inside light-filled guest rooms with tall ceilings, oversized picture windows frame the landscape. Clean lines and a cool color palette create a serene ambience, complemented by contemporary light fixtures and artwork depicting local wildlife and marine scenes. Comfortable beds feature 800-count cotton linens and a Hutterite down duvet. En suite bathrooms are stocked with locally made artisanal toiletries. Enjoy local chocolates and morning coffee from the furnished French press, and find fresh milk, cream and water in the mini fridge. Taste, the on-site restaurant, offers sustainable seafood sourced from Ocean Wise partners, accompanied by locally sourced ingredients from farmers and butchers.

With the aim of achieving net zero emissions for all operations and tours, the inn’s extensive sustainability efforts have earned it Green Step’s Sustainable Tourism Gold certification, testimony to its high number of initiatives and commitment to best practices across environmental, social and economic pillars. Achievements include composting unused food to transitioning to an electric and hybrid vehicle fleet, eliminating single-use plastics and relying on solar and hydroelectric power. Through its partnership with the Atlantic Healthy Oceans Initiative, the inn is working to become one of Newfoundland’s only Ocean Wise-certified Seafood Partners and a B Corp establishment.
