Amakoro Songa Lodge
Location
Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda
The closest lodge to the ranger station and entrance to Volcanoes National Park, Amakoro Songa Lodge is optimally situated for gorilla trekking. It takes its name from the black volcanic rocks that characterize this mountainous part of Rwanda that is home to the mountain gorillas. Located near a small village, the lodge is set on seven acres of manicured lawns and gardens surrounded by three imposing volcanoes. The setting is perfect for birdwatchers, who can enjoy viewing a wide variety of species on the premises. Eight individual cottages offer spacious private accommodations, fusing elements of traditional local style, including heavy rustic wood furniture (sustainably sourced) with modern amenities. Each has a cozy fireplace creating a comfortable haven to return to after our rain forest adventures with the gorillas. The communal lounge, with a high-pitched thatched roof, invites relaxing as you take in the mountain panorama out the floor-to-ceiling windows. Beyond, the terrace awaits, with more seating for fresh-air views. The outdoor fireplace is a special highlight, with seating in the round for watching evening performances by the local Intore dance troupe. Meals are also memorable, with locally grown spices and organic vegetables used by the lodge chefs to create a diverse array of dishes that cater to international tastes. Many lodge staff come from the local community and are enthusiastic about sharing hospitality and their deep knowledge of the area with guests.
